Summary One of the prime targets in the development of rural areas – not only in Germany, but also in other EU-countries – is to neutralise the connection between rural exodus and agricultural decline. The production of renewable resources is a chance to do so. In the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries, resources from biological growing are yet needed to a greater extent to fight arisen resistance and allergic reactions. One remembers the healing power of nature and substances, that are well-tolerated by humans and biodegradable. For agricultural enterprises (big ones as well as family-owned enterprises) the growth of renewable resources is an opportunity to stabilise the enterprise, to create promising jobs and to improve its competitive strength by the occupation of economical niches. Accomplished research activities and first practical tests with plants and roots like medicinical rhubarb, indian plantain, wild rose and ivy rind have shown, that there is great demand for ecologically produced basic substances by the pharmaceutical industry and for phyto-pharmaceutics by the people. Besides the nitrogen-inflow into running waters can be reduced by the growth of renewable resources. Surveys in agricultural enterprises however showed that there is hardly systematic encouragement and establishment of innovations in any enterprise. This only takes place in the field of product and production improvement. The enterprises hardly deal with new ideas that lead to absolutely new products and methods. To improve the acceptance of products made of renewable resources, to extent the general demand for such products and to compensate informational and educational deficits, it is necessary to qualify farmers, agricultural engineers and other agricultural employees and to put the acquired knowledge into practice.
