Title Sustainability Training and Assessment in the Tourism Sector
Project Number 2013-1-TR1-LEO05-47591
Project Type Transfer of Innovation
Marketing Text Transferring and adapting to local contexts, an innovative Dutch/ English CSR training and management programme for travel companies through Turkish, French and Bulgarian Travel/ Business Associations and VET institutes.
Discussions and actions around Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) have matured rapidly, driven by demand for greater accountability of businesses to society. This development is driven by:
-Sustainable destinations are essential for long term survival of a tourism sector and provide a competitive advantage
-About 60% of consumers in Western European countries expect ethical behaviour from companies they buy from
-B2B, companies ahead in CSR expect their business partners in destinations to comply with basic but gradually raising CSR requirements
The proposed project introduces CSR in the vocational knowledge and competences of current and future European travel professionals working in the Tour operator & Travel agents sector and their supply chain. It transfers an established and innovative CSR training and assessment system (Travelife) developed by UK and Dutch tourism stakeholders to Turkey, Bulgaria and France.
The consortium consist of:
1.Exporting partner: developers of the sectorwide CSR training and awardsystem.
2.Importing partners: national travel / business associations aiming to support their members in CSR, training and project management partners.
VET institutes in each country are involved to deliver the training to their students. Consortium members have extensive experience in transnational cooperation from joint work on the development of the system to previous cooperation on sustainable tourism projects.
In the short term, project results will contribute to reducing the skills gaps in the labour market by enabling travel associations and VET institutes to offer CSR training and assessment, and support tourism companies to include CSR in their business models.
In the long run, this project will improve the tourism sector’s professional capacities to minimise their environmental, economic and social impacts, and change habits and attitudes of travel companies’ employees and tourism VET students towards society.
Establishing strong and active links between the initial VET sector and trade associations, the project will improve the quality and effectiveness of education and training in both fields.
Travel agents and tour operators play a central role in the tourism industry. As intermediates between tourists and tourism businesses they can influence the choices of consumers, practices of suppliers and the development in destinations. Through their unique position they can make an important contribution to the protection of the environment and culture, and in promoting social and human rights standards.
In the past decade Travelife was developed by Dutch and UK travel associations and their members, in close collaboration with NGO's. This collaboration resulted in an innovative Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) training and assessment system for the tourism sector. In result, hundreds of travel professionals worldwide now have knowledge and practical online tools to operate their business more sustainable.
The SUSTOUR project transfers this innovation and facilitates the introduction of the proven CSR training and management system among members of Turkish, Bulgarian and French travel associations. The methodology components will be adapted to each country’s particular context and will be tested and local capacity will be built to manage, promote and expand the CSR training system and quality standards.
With the incorporation into the training programmes of the travel industry and VET curricula of Turkey, France and Bulgaria, long-term continuity is assured. This will enhance the knowledge and competences of current and future tourism professionals and travel companies and secure environmental, social and economic sustainability of the European travel industry.
The SUSTOUR project runs from December 2013 to December 2015.
