Title ALL4WELL Accessible Language Learning for the Wellness Sector
Project Number 2013-1-IT-LEO05-04040
Project Type Transfer of Innovation
Marketing Text Accessible Language Learning for the Wellness Sector. Based on the results of the projects ELLVIS and VET4VIP, the ALL4WELL project provided a job-oriented English course giving an answer to the needs of visually impaired masseurs and wellness professionals.
The profession of a masseur is one of the most prestigious jobs for blind and visually impaired people. In some countries protective laws oblige public and private employers to employ blind masseurs. Due to the demographic development in Europe, wellness oriented applications offer increasing opportunities for masseurs and wellness professionals, especially within the tourism sector.
For the blind masseur or wellness professional verbal interaction plays a significant role in the healing process, based on positive personal relationship. Being able to make oneself understood in the patient’s or tourist’s language - or in a common language - increases job opportunities and success in work. Therefore, for those desiring to work in the wellness sector there is an obvious demand for broader communicative skills, knowledge of foreign languages and intercultural skills, if they want to raise their employment prospects.
However, blind or visually impaired people trying to learn a language, especially language for the job, find out that training centres are usually not prepared for visually impaired people. This is also very true for the field of blind and visually handicapped masseurs and wellness professionals where there is a perceptible shortage of suitable language training material. As a result, up to now foreign language training has been very marginal in a curriculum for visually impaired wellness professionals.
This situation is challenged by a consortium of four institutions for blind and visually impaired that either organise training for masseurs and wellness professionals or provide this training in-house. These partners are supported by three language training centres that have experience in the creation and adaptation of existing language courses for visually impaired learners.
Based on the results of the projects ELLVIS and VET4VIP, the project ALL4WELL (Accessible Language Learning for the Wellness Sector) provided a job-oriented English course in order to give an adequate answer to the needs of visually impaired masseurs and wellness professionals.
The innovative user-interface of the course provides easy access to the content, thus broadening the possibilities of language teaching to the blind and visually impaired.
Within the core activities of the All4Well project have been involved developers of software/multimedia supports, with the aim to transfer and adapt the computer-based English language course ELLVIS to the needs and requirements of German, Italian and Romanian learners working in the wellness sector.
The ELLVIS language course (English Language Learning for Visually Impaired Students) is a language course especially developed for blind and visually impaired students. The course developed for Microsoft Windows systems uses force-feedback joysticks to create a haptic user interface. The course, including instructions for users is available for download under http://www.ellvis.allvip.org/prod.htm.
The software consists of a run-time player, script files for the course, and sound files for the language materials. The ELLVIS script files are encrypted, but the original script files are written in xml language.
Sample modules containing plain xml script files as well as a basic tool to modify the modules can be found on the website http://www.vet4vip.org/.
The software itself (run-time player and editing tools) was created by GedonSoft GmbH (http://www.gedonsoft.de).
The existing ELLVIS language course has been adapted to the language needs of trainers and learners in the wellness sector.
Due to its special target group (blind and visually impaired students), the existing course has been refined and updated by implementing new training and learning methods and materials. The tasks initially planned to address the project’s aims were structured in the following n. 6 WPs:
WP 1 - Qualification Framework (November 2013 – March 2014)
The work package has reached its three main aims:
1. National reports from Countries Partners describing the special language learning needs of blind and visually impaired people working in the wellness sector are done.
2. A qualification framework bundling of the national reports into a common needs analysis exists.
3. The overall concept of the ALL4WELL course is described.
WP 2 - Transfer of Ellvis and Vet4Vip modules (March 2014 – July 2014)
The work package had as main aims to describe and define the (paper-based) transfer of the ELLVIS and VET4VIP into the ALL4WELL course and write a Teacher's Manual for the ALL4WELL course. These tasks are done.
WP 3 - Compilation of ALL4WELL course (June 2014 – August 2015)
Among the aims of the WP there were the following:
1. To program and to adapt the Authoring System for ALL4WELL course that allows language teachers to further adapt the modules to the needs of their learners and the ALL4WELL English course for learners working in the wellness sector.
2. To record, edit and cut the sound files for German-speaking learners, Italian-speaking learners and Romanian-speaking learners (instructions, grammar explanations, cultural information for the course). All these tasks listed above have been well accomplished.
WP 4 - Compilation of ALL4WELL English course (November 2014 – August 2015)
In this work package the ALL4WELL course has been tested and evaluated, the final version of the course and the evaluation report are now available as OER.
WP 5 - Dissemination and Valorisation (December 2013 – September 2015)
In WP5 the partnership agreed on a common dissemination strategy, the project, its goals and tasks are well-known on a national and transnational level and the project results meant for publication are easily available. The project has been well promoted and shared with the stakeholders with good results in terms of potentiality of exploitation.
WP 6 – Project Management and Reporting (October 2013 – September 2015)
This WP was fundamental for the realization of the whole project because it concerns the overall coordination of the planned activities, including the Project Management and Financial Management.
The lead partner of this WP was Centro Machiavelli (P1), who managed the project in cooperation with the P0 UICI Firenze along the two years of its duration, collected and summarised all the narrative and financial information from each partner. Then it organised everything and submitted to the National Agency both the interim report for the first 13th months and the final one, at the end of all activities.

Based on the results of the projects ELLVIS and VET4VIP, the ALL4WELL project provided a job-oriented English course aimed to meet the needs of visually impaired masseurs and wellness professionals.
The innovative user-interface of the course provides easy access to the content, thus broadening the possibilities of language teaching to the blind and visually impaired. The job-oriented content that can be put into practice on the spot will not only bring new motivational input to the students, but will also provide those students with tools to improve their versatility and mobility as far as language is concerned – and thus their employment outlooks.
The project results are:
1) Qualification Framework – Need Analysis (+Technical Specifications)
2) ALL4WELL course script describing the structure, elements, learning goals, and methods of the planned.
3) ALL4WELL course Teacher's Manual describing learning goals, content and structure of the course including technical instructions and recommendations for the classroom.
4) Adapted Authoring System-Assistant for the creation and/or adaptation/updating/change of the ALL4WELL course. ALL4WELL English course for learners working in the wellness sector.
