Marketing Text TOOLBOXLAB aims at developing, testing and promoting a training resource for construction companies, enabling them to organise successful toolbox meetings. A face-to-face course focuses on how to set up an effective toolbox meeting system, conduct such meetings, get workers to participate, and communicate about health and safety issues. An online platform, including a database with qualitative information on workplace safety and health, will provide additional support.
Toolbox meetings or toolbox talks are well established in the construction sector. They are short, to-the-point, interactive meetings on the workplace, guided by the foreman. They are meant to encourage team members to talk and think about their safety and health at work.
The route to improved occupational safety and health (OSH) on construction sites is concentrated at frontline management level (foremen). Toolbox meetings are in this regard effective instruments to influence workers’ behaviour, if done in the right way. In practice, however, they fall short because of different reasons: the foremen are not properly trained to guide an interactive safety meeting, they lack some necessary communication skills, they do not have access to qualitative and user-friendly information on specific OSH topics, they lack the proper support from their managers,...
-Improve safety and health on construction sites in Europe through better OSH communication.
-Identify the specific needs in construction companies in terms of organising toolbox meetings that enable workers to truly talk about their safety and health.
-Convince (line) managers and OSH professionals (safety engineers) of the importance to set up an effective toolbox system, which supports frontline management (foremen) and encourages worker participation.
-Enhance the skills and knowledge of foremen in the construction sector on how to guide a successful toolbox meeting in order to have a real impact on workers' safety behaviour.
-Transfer the existing concepts and approaches of toolbox meetings to the specific situation of the construction sector in all partner countries.
-Develop an online platform and database with useful information on OSH topics to be used by foremen, line managers and OSH professionals as a resource for toolbox meetings.
Product information The training programme will first be tested in Belgium. Afterwards the approach and content will be translated, adapted and transferred to Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey.
