The Handbook for appraisers includes standards
and methodological guidance for an appraisal process of teachers in General Practice/Family Medicine form the perspective of appraisers.
The main aim of the Handbook (being a reference document for appraisers) is to ensure that appraisals are carried out with due rigour and reliability and to support appraisers in gaining the required level of skill.
The Handbook for appraisers includes standards and methodological guidance for an appraisal process of teachers in General Practice/Family Medicine.
Its role is to describe step by step, the rules aims and technical practicalities of GP/FM teachers appraisal process – from the perspective of appraiser (reviewers).
• Family Medicine/General Practice teachers (both practice based and academic teachers).
• Family Medicine/General Practice doctors (who in future might become teachers)
• Family Medicine/General Practice educational experts
• Health policy decision makers (e.g. president and members of the FM/GP associations)
• Medical academies/universities representatives
• Medical education experts
• Health services providers representatives
Together with the remaining project products the Handbook constitute a basis for the development of a common pan-European model for the quality improvement of GP teachers through a process of personal appraisal using an expertise model of teaching skills (Template and Portfolio).
The provision of structured and standardized procedures for the appraisal process of GP teaching competency, based on the specific descriptors of the specific competencies which need to be demonstrated, will have a pivotal role in ensuring that the delivery of GP education is harmonized and the quality improved across Europe.
