Title Guidelines for Museum Mediators professionals in Europe
Project Number 2012-1-PT1-LEO05-11293
Project Type Projets de transfert d'innovation
Marketing Text Le projet du Musée médiateurs stimulera la création de la formation et des directives professionnelles qui soutiendront le travail du musée de médiation et d'éducation des agents à travers l'Europe.
In spite of the importance of culture and museums in European Union's identity and economy, the role of the cultural mediator is still undervalued. Across Europe, the Museum and Heritage Educators are highly qualified professionals with fragile relations with the employer, with very diversified academic and museum contexts, most of whom with little or none communication and education training skills.
The main goal is to create a training course for Museum Mediators/ Educators, that represents the institutional and professional needs of Museums' mediation professionals in the European countries that participate in the project: Portugal, Spain, Estonia, Finland and Italy.
Mapa das Ideias will export the training course that was tested in Portuguese (2009, 2010, 2011) and European (Loures, Oporto, Brussels, Barcelona sessions) settings, with an international team of lecturers.
By developing this common training ground among Museum professionals in the five participating countries, the project will stimulate the creation of training and professional guidelines that will sustain the work of Museum Mediation and Education officers.
According to the European Comission Study “The Impact of Culture on Creativity” (2009) (http://ec.europa.eu/culture/key-documents/doc/study_impact_cult), «The impact and value of culture-based creativity on the economy is huge, inspiring people to learn»,playing a pivotal role in the European:
a) An increasing share of economic activity;
b) Undisputed social impact, with huge touristic, identity and territorial cohesion value;
c) Social inclusion agent (http://www.nba.fi/tiedostot/fc40d76d.pdf).

Yet, the role of the museum mediator is undervalued, in spite of the role that the relation with Museum and Heritage visitors represents the threshold for institutional survival.
The Museum Mediator and Educator is typically a highly qualified professional with an unstable and intermitent relation with the employer, accumulating different projects, with the most diversified academic background, most of whom have little to none communication and education training.

Hence the ICTOP/ ICOM (http://ictop.alfahosting.org/) definition of “Manager of the education and visitor service” and “Education and visitor service officer”, in Portugal, for instance, the Museum Educator or Mediator is not recognized in Museum national standard, published in 2001 (Decreto-Lei nº 55/2001, 15/Fev.). The EU has a diversified reality, but in a whole, this situation is quite usual in the countries that participate in the project.
Besides this, little to none courses are dedicated to Museum Education: Portugal, University of Évora; Spain, Zaragoza University; United Kingdom, Leicester University. In the EU, the Tourism Flandres a course for “Museum Guides” focused on these specific competences for unemployed people.
