Description The situation analysis & needs assessment report is targeted at the partners, the partnership’s target groups and the general public. It is a 30page report summarizing the literature review, interview-based and survey-based research findings on: current practices and programmes on writing and communication training for SME professionals; employer & employee training needs & preferences in professional writing and communication. The findings included in this report were used as a guide for determining the content, structure, length and style of an effective training manual and online course on professional writing and communication skills in English.

Based on the literature review, a great variety of programs and bodies/organizations offering vocational training was identified. More specifically, there is an identified trend showing an increasing amount of vocational training programs, focused on business English. The most common bodies/organizations offering vocational training programs, across the participating countries are language schools, vocational training centers, public universities, chambers, as well as other private organizations. The specific characteristics of each program, such as price, length, assessment and content, vary from country to country. Furthermore, depending on the organization offering the program, some vocational training programs are accredited by an authority of the country and some are not. Finally, among the identified vocational training programs on business communication, only a few vocational training programs were offered in the form of e-learning.
Based on the results for the in-depth interviews, most respondents mentioned that the writing and communication skills are the most important and at the same time missing from today’s workforce. However, the needs of the companies, vary according to their specific activity sector. The respondents also mentioned the importance of low cost training for their employees, as well as the ability of training them via e-learning platforms, so as to save time. Finally, regarding future needs, the respondents mentioned that it is important to have the ability to offer continuous and affordable training to their employees.
Based on the online survey, as an overall result, it could be mentioned that, the most needed skills were those related to written and oral communication. Furthermore, today’s workforce was found to be deficient mostly in correspondence, document writing and project management. The most popular training methods among SMEs were found to be on the job training and one on one coaching. Regarding training tools, video lectures, interactive quizzes, case studies and problem solving exercises were considered to be the most effective. On the other hand, the traditional printed material was rather characterized as less effective. Finally, based on the majority of the respondents, a validation of the course was not considered an important characteristic.
