In the project COSIMA an instrument for simulating processes developed in Germany - the so-called "Learning Factory" - has been adapted to the situation of young people in career orientation, apprenticeships and adolescent employees (-25 years) and has been transferred to the participating partner countries.
"Learning Factory" helped companies to optimize processes and combines theory-based method training with real preconditions. Thereby it offered a high degree of practical connection.
The experiences made with "Learning Factory" gave a new and more detailed inside into the real challenges in companies. Employees took interrelated processes into consideration when acting and thereby become aware of more effective ways of working.
The complex requirements in today’s constantly changing structures in the labour market offer new challenges to concepts of work qualification. Practical connection and flexibility to adjust to the needs are becoming basic requirements for successful, effective qualification measures. For better teaching results employees should be seen as part of their companies rather than being considered as individuals without company background. To teach employees accordingly “Learning Factory" offered a wide variety of possibilities, in particular introducing process-optimizing methods to employees in the frame of a simulation of company planning processes as a basic requirement for sustainable business activity. The participants gained diverse competences by this way of learning, the project-oriented learning: independent learning, ability to work in a team, analysis and communication competences as well as intercultural competences. Aspects of project-oriented learning were team work, discussions, acting independently and assuming responsibility. Young employees as well as people in career orientation or in apprenticeships experienced important and necessary skills in a creative, playful way. These competences required no further training but could be used immediately. At the same time companies could benefit from the competences acquired by the young employees. These skills were be an asset to the optimization of processes.
The project consortium consisted of eight partners which were active in vocational qualification. They were situated in Germany, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Estonia and the Czech Republic and intended to adjust the existing method of "Learning Factory" to the needs of the project’s target group (young people under 25) and to transfer it to all partner countries and throughout Europe.
To achieve the adaptation and the transfer of "Learning Factory", the simulation game has been prepared for young people in career orientation, apprenticeships and adolescent employees. Furthermore respective modules and training materials (intercultural competences, methods of process optimization) as well as a pedagogic and didactic concepts have been developed and translated into English. Training materials and working instructions for the simulation game etc. have been tested in several phases.
In the testing period of the “train-the-trainer course”, trainers of the project partners have been intensively and integrally instructed in the method and application of "Learning Factory". Afterwards the training materials have been translated into the languages of the participating countries and the content and pedagogical principles have been applied to the national requirements in the partner countries. So that the training could be piloted in the respective partner countries and be implemented sustainably.
