Marketing Text There is an ever increasing emphasis in renewable energy sources in power production. One of the oldest and most extensively used ones is the hydropower. A typical hydro power plant is a complex feature of engineering that has to be precisely controlled and synchronized with the power grid voltage and frequency. Hydro power plants are commonly located in remote areas all over the world. It is therefore very expensive to send many different employees there in order to perform the tasks they are specialized in. The profile of people on the spot is that they are usually not enough educated and their lack of the overview and understanding of the whole poweplant assembly and understanding of functioning is often the cause of very costly errors. A decision to make a small scale powerplant simulator has therefore been made in order to train people and employees with the needed profile.
The main emphasis is given on the controlling of the powerplant as an independant unit or included in a wider powergrid. All the pertaining equipment (controllers, etc.) of the small scale powerplant will be the same as in a real one. The mechanical parts are of course of much smaller size.
The main aim of the project is to prepare employees of lower education for a more independent task execution. The job of controller programming is not physically demanding and can be performed by disabled employees as well. Companies that make powerplants are usually large companies with many employees. Due to the nature of the work accidents are inevitable. The casualties are often disabled and consequently it is difficult to find a proper job for them within the company. Controller setup is probably the least physically demanding job in such projects and it is therefore very benefitial if employees can be trained to perform that kind of work.
The powerplant simulator was designed by Litostroj Power, ČKD Blansko and University of Ljubljana. An analog version of such a machine is successfully used in ČKD Blansko for education purposes. Whit their expertise, Litostroj Power constructed the simulator and program the controller. University of Ljubljana helped in the design process and wrote a detailed textbook for the simulator together with the control theory background. Because Litostroj has a lot of projects in South America it is very beneficial if the programmers can speak in Spanish as well. Although they attend Spanish language courses it is difficult for them to communicate with local people, because they don't know the technical terms. For that purpose Agpyme S.L. from Spain joined the consortium. They translated the textbook in Spanish language. Whit their translation it will be possible to learn all the technical terms easily. The dissemination, testing and evaluation was done by ŠC Kranj, SiPŠ.
As a result of the project we expect the (disabled) people who will finish training on this simulator to be easily employed on one of many projects in South America.

Product information The product of the project is a compact model of horizontal Pelton hydro power plant with one jet nozzle. It is regulated by digital turbine governor. The device is used for control programming and observing the system response to different input signals. User manual is written for teachers in English and Spanish language. The product was evaluated by consortium teachers and their students. After evaluation and modification the product was ready for other interested groups.
