Title Promoting Multilingualism in Exporting SMEs by Communication Auditing - ProMES
Project Number 2012-1-SK 1-LEO05-04127
Project Type Transfer of Innovation
The Promoting Multilingualism in Exporting SMEs by Communication Auditing (ProMES) transfers a focused business support scheme that run successfully in other European countries. It aimed at enhancing SMEs’ international competitiveness, bridging gaps between business support organisations and enterprises a designed scheme which enables the filling of communicative gaps and maintaining high quality standards in international business communication in SMEs.
The project was unique by developing innovative practices in the field of vocational education and creating a new type of European professional expert: the Language Communication Auditor (LCA) specialising in export communication in SMEs. By identifying a lack of contextualised communication skills SMEs become aware of foreign language skills needs for specific purposes thus supporting and encouraging the learning of modern foreign languages.
Exporting SMEs belong to the sector which experiences most difficulty facing language barriers. The introduction and implementation of the communication audit to enable SMEs to improve their competitiveness enabled more to survive and expand through export and thus support a multilingual intercultural workforce whilst retaining higher levels of employment. Furthermore this helped to fix or even create job opportunities by introducing new employment types with the auditors and scheme managers thereby supporting mobility within the European workforce.
Aims and Objectives: To enhance the competitiveness of international SMEs within 3 new countries and regions (Slovakia, Catalonia and Czech Republic by implementing an audit scheme to identify and remove communicative barriers which arise from cross-border trade thus supporting the development of a multilingual workforce.
Description The aims and objectives of the project were based on the key targets of the Lisbon Agenda and refer to Priority 1 as the project aims to improve identification of skills and competences needed in SMEs by applying VET based skills through an auditing process. ProMES focuses on training auditors with the skills to enhance individual companies’ trade performance in identifying linguistic and intercultural barriers and finding solutions to overcome these. They were to review the feasibility of audit schemes in Slovakia, Czech Republic and Spain, to adapt, produce and enhance the training materials in four partner languages (SK, CZ, Catalan, ES), and to implement and trial these materials by training auditors and carrying out pilot Communication reviews of SMEs in the target countries (and so encourage the business services support system to adapt accordingly).
